Tv Marketing and Distribution (advertising)
Aim: to investigate how media products are advertised to audiences.
Advertising: Payments from brands in return for the placement of promotional material on pages or during production - could be in the form of commercial breaks, or via product placement.
over the past 20 years advertising has branched out - we now have social media that can be used as an advertising platform. Instagram - photos, pay Instagram to post ads in the form of videos/ photos, sponsorships - paying social influencers to promote a product via the app.
Ways of advertising tv:
posters on buses
showing ads before a program begins
social media platforms
product placement: is the inclusion of a branded product in media, usually without explicit reference to the product. Most commonly, branded products are featured in movies, TV shows and video games... product placement can be much more cost-effective than other types of marketing.
Eg. The movie I,Robot places converse shoes on the actor and then the shoes are actually blatantly mentioned in the scene.
Eg. In the movie Waynes World the camera zooms in on a number of different products which are all clearly labelled and branded - suggests the movie got a number of different sponsors for the production of the movie.
There are 2 different forms of advertising:
Traditional advertising: Is usually well-established and easy to place. Such as;
Technological convergence: allows audiences to access media content from multiple platforms on one device. it involves the coming together of information and communication technologies to create new ways of producing and distributing products and services to media audiences.
A black box is a device that supplies us with all of our informational and media requirements (e.g. a smartphone)
Web 2.0: the dot.com boom ( 1998-2001) was a huge rise in the number of internet-based companies.
There was then a shift from web 1.0 to web 2.0 . It was the possibility of 'staying' online and interacting online which really changed things.
Web 2.0 site allows users to interact and collaborate with each other in a social media dialogue as creators ( prosumers) or user-generated content.
It is known as 'new digital media' and shapes relations of public/private/, work/non work, home/outside home. Mobile phones enhance social connections that have always existed: gossip, making arrangements etc.

Simulcasting: When a media product is broadcast both online and via a traditional medium at the same time. In television terms, it could refer to programme being broadcast on two different channels (such as the french open tennis tournament).
on a side not =, the us open tennis tournament was broadcast on amazon prime in 2018, one of the first occurrences of a video streaming service acquiring the rights to a live sporting contest.
Below-the-line advertising: The distribution of pamphlets, stickers, promotions etc. at the point of sale. Eg. receiving a pamphlet for a local restaurant through your letter box. It can also be social media advertising as it targets specific groups of people. Word of mouth can also be seen as an example.

There are 2 different forms of advertising:
Traditional advertising: Is usually well-established and easy to place. Such as;
- print posters
- newspapers
- radio
- broadcast television
- cable television
- outdoor billboards
- magazines
- brochures/flyers/business cards
- social media - sponsored ads on instagram.
- company websites
- pop-up ads
- display ads: the original form of online advertising, theses are visual ads that appear on third party websites ( usually ones that are related to your content or service in some way)
- social media ads: in 2015, social media commerce totaled $30 billion in the US. Its a marketing arena that is not only efficient but effective. very similar to display ads, social media ads can be anything from a simple banner or image to an auto-play video.
- search engine marketing (SEM): the most dependable form of online paid advertising ( also most common). SEM works based on keywords- you and other businesses like yours bid on keywords through search engines in an effort to get your website higher up on the search results page (SERP).
- native marketing: sponsored listings at the end of blog posts, appearing on your facebook feeds and posted to other social media.
- remarking/ retargeting: the best way to market to people who already know about your product and service is to remarked to them. Or retarget. depends on who your talking to.
- video ads:while youtube ads are the most popular and well known of video ads, there are actually several different formats, types and content options.
- email marketing: hanging out with display ads back near the start of online advertising, email marketing is a cheaper, faster and effective form of advertising.
Above-the-line advertising: Where mass media is used to promote brands. These include conventional media such as television and radio advertising, print and the internet.
Distribution - includes 2 elements:
1. how a product or brand reaches an audience ( web, cinema, tv)
Web 2.0 and technological conversions:

Narrowcast channels: television channels that distribute special interest (niche) content.
Again, excellent note-taking. Keep up the good work.
