newspapers marketing and distribution

Marketing and distribution:

The independent: the last printed version of the independent was published on Saturday 26th march 2016, leaving only its digital editions. The I was also launched as a competitor for free papers. Originally a sister newspaper to the independent, it cost 20p when first published. however, it is now owned by JPIMedia. Currently the independent uses social media as a way to market their newspaper - facebook, twitter, instagram and facebook. Similarly the readership for the sun is ABC. They have their own app called ' independent minds' which includes exclusive stories.

If you look at the independent homepage they use pop-up advertising as a means of generating revenue.

In comparison to The Sun, The independent offers a membership scheme that gives readers exclusives, events, ebooks and extras with no advertising in the newspapers content. Within this they also offer a mobile app for The Independent daily and Independent Minds ( sister newspaper).Whereas The Sun distribute predominantly print copies with an online version that is available for subscription. These are billed £7.99 per month, the equivalent of buying a print copy four times per week. For that amount, users get access to The Sun's digital journalism, football highlights and free gifts, offers and competition entries. The suns readership (based on NRS social grades) is C2DE - "White Van Man". The Sun ran a regular white van man column for some years in which the driver of a light goods vehicle was interviewed in his van on the issues of the day. These columns were accompanied by a picture of whichever driver had been interviewed leaning out of his cab. similarly both papers have the usual social media - twitter, facebook and instagram.

"White van man" is a stereotype used in the United Kingdom for a smaller-sized commercial van driver,  typically perceived as a selfish, inconsiderate driver who is mostly petit bourgeois and often aggressive. According to this stereotype, the "white van man" is typically an independent tradesperson, such as a builder, plumber or locksmith, self-employed, or running a small enterprise, for whom driving a commercial vehicle is not their main line of business, as it would be for a professional freight-driver."

The Sun:

Advertising: They use above-the-line billboards which is advertising where mass media is used to promote brands and reach out to the target consumers. These include conventional media as we know it, television, radio and advertising, print as well as internet. This is communication that is targeted to a wider speed of audience, and is not specific to individual consumers.

The sun have their own personal YouTube channel where they upload popular content for anyone to view.

The Sun uses pop up ads to generate revenue from their own website.

Textual analysis:

Based on the front covers of both newspapers, there is a clear difference in target audiences. For example, The Independent has an article on its front page - featuring small sans serif fonts and a minimal amount of pictures. Whereas The Sun features more pictures, straplines and tag lines than small font articles. Similarly as The Sun has a target audience of the 'White Van Man' and so they use the 'male gaze theory'  to draw readers in. The masthead uses a sans-serif font, with a red background - these papers are often nicknamed 'red tops' ( the mirror, the daily star, news of the world). Sans serif fonts are used throughout the front cover.

"The male gaze is the act of depicting women and the world, in the visual arts and in literature, from a masculine, heterosexual perspective that presents and represents women as sexual objects for the pleasure of the male viewer." Laura Mulvey and the male gaze - catering to a predominately male audience, The Sun often features semi- clad women in its pages - these women are objectified for the male gaze - men gain sexual gratification from them.

Exam question:

(c) From your knowledge of demographics describe and justify the type of content that might feature in four newspapers of your choice from the data provided.

newspaper 1: The Sun

Content and justification: The sun is a tabloid newspaper, also known as a "red top" that appeals to the c2de nrs social grade, based on this the newspaper produce content that lacks in word heavy articles and instead include more pictures. Similarly due to this they then use photos that will appeal to the target audience - predominately male for this tabloid, and so they use photos of women on the front cover. By doing this they are using the male gaze theory that is the act of depicting women and the world, in the visual arts and in literature, from a masculine, heterosexual perspective that presents and represents women as sexual objects for the pleasure of the male viewer.

Newspaper 2: The Independent

Content and justification: The independent is a British online newspaper that began publishing as a broadsheet. It has a target audience of predominately white middle-class and appeals to the AB nrs social grade. Similarly the newspaper is more article heavy than those of the "red tops", it is also a more political newspaper with the front page covering international news - France uprising.
