- Active theory - David Gauntlett - sociological and psychological factors

David Gauntlett
(2004) argues that the passive spectatorship model is outdated; it patronises audiences by assuming that they are all the same. He takes issue with the idea that media texts are solely to blame for societal ills, without taking sociological or psychological problems into consideration.
Gauntlett argues, rather, for active audience theory.

Public service broadcasting:
- BBC is a good example of a public service broadcaster
- Remit is the responsibility fo a programme
- BBC remit is to enrich peoples lives with the programmed and services that inform, educate and entertain

- They have a remit because tax payers pay for the uk through a tv license
Vertical and horizontal integration;
Vertical; in which a media company has the ability to control the production, distribution and exchange (consumption) of a product.
Horizontal; in which a media company has a number of subsidiary companies that are used to support the marketing of its products.
Cross-media = a conglomerate that produces one or more type of media.
commercial television:
The aim of commercial stations ( itv, 5 and SKY) is to provide popular shows that attract an audience - therefore leading to higher prices when advertising is sold. All commercial terrestrial stations (itv, channel 5) are funded by advertising.
In order to figure out what people want they will use research data - focus groups, qualitative and quantitative data, pilots of programmes.

Black box; telephone, computer, iPad
Simulcasting; is the broadcasting of programs or events across more than one medium , or more than one service on the same medium, at exactly the same time.
Narrowcast channels; to send data to a specific list of recipients. cable tv is an example of this. tv signals are sent only to homes that have subscribed to the cable service.
Impact of online distribution; music and tv can now be downloaded, streamed or simulcasted at the click of a button - without ever having to leave your armchair. It is available to you whenever, wherever.
Blumler and Katz - uses and gratifications theory
An audience wants to;
- be informed or educated
- identify with characters of the situation in the media environment
- simple entertainment
- enhance social interaction
- escape from the stresses of daily life
